In the late 1990s, conversations were beginning, primarily in independent school circles but including several large public school districts, asking the question: Do externally imposed advanced curricula and the external examination systems that support them best represent the missions of schools and the interests of students and teachers? From there a loose organization of passionate educators was born, dedicated to developing the capacity for design and implementation of high quality, mission-based, teacher-created curriculum, and assessments. In 2008 they became the Independent Curriculum Group (ICG), with Bruce Hammond as founding Executive Director. Under Hammonds leadership, the ICG began organizing and facilitating a series of regional conferences and conversations on many aspects of 21st-century learning, from best practices in teaching and curriculum design to leading and managing school innovation. The ICG also provided consulting services and support to schools engaged in developing and implementing their own kinds of “independent curriculum.”
In 2013, Peter Gow became the second Executive Director of the ICG. The consortium grew under Peter's leadership to include over 220 independent, public charter, and traditional public schools, continuing a legacy of helping schools develop ideas, resources, capabilities, and confidence to best serve their own students in alignment with its own mission and values. In 2018 the Independent Curriculum Group began partnering with One Schoolhouse to offer an expanded program of Academic Leaders Retreats and online professional development courses. On July 1, 2019, the Independent Curriculum Group became a part of One Schoolhouse, with Peter Gow becoming the One Schoolhouse Independent Curriculum Resource Director.
Quickly, the resources and work of the organizations were combined resulting in a robust document library dedicated to helping academic leaders at schools operate effectively in mission-critical work. And, surreptitiously, the resources, knowledge, and skill of the now-combined One Schoolhouse team, was able to guide school leaders from the very start of the COVID-19 pandemic, most importantly by creating Standards for Hybrid Learning that were used worldwide.
The Advanced Independent Curriculum™ (AIC™) standards and training is the most recent outcome of the legacy of the ICG and the innovative work of One Schoolhouse.
