What is course certification?  One Schoolhouse course certification is a structured process in which a school submits their case that a particular course or class meets the One Schoolhouse standards for Advanced Independent Curriculum™. Teachers seeking certification for a course typically enroll in the One Schoolhouse course Implementing Advanced Independent Curriculum.  Participation in this course includes guidance in submitting a course for certification, and the cost includes certification for one course with no additional fees.  

Teachers will upload three items in their application for AIC™ Certification. Collectively, these materials are intended to demonstrate that the course aligns with the Principles and Standards of AIC™ and meets the AIC™ Course Certification Requirements. 

• AIC™ Rubric:  The completed AIC™ rubric for the course.
• Video: A screencast, a video, or narrated slideshow presentation of the case for approval.  
• Exemplar: A single exemplar of student work in the course (with all identifying information removed) that includes the rubric for the assignment. 

One Schoolhouse’s AIC™ review committee will examine the submitted materials to determine alignment to the principles and standards of advanced independent curriculum. We will review the submission and either issue a certification or offer feedback for revision.

​What do we receive when our course is certified?

​​You receive a certificate, permission to use the copyrighted phrase Advanced Independent Curriculum™ in your materials and on your website, and editable templates and sharable resources that can be used within your community and external parties. 

​What do we get when a submitted course is not yet ready for certification?

You will receive feedback and suggested resources for bringing your course into compliance. You can submit your course a second time with no additional fees. Resubmissions beyond the initial two will incur $200/hour consulting fees.

​How LONG does certification LAST?

We have a 3-year cycle for a course that is currently being taught. Certification of a proposed course that has never been taught is provisional for one year, with a full certification (for 2 years) after one year of the course being taught, bringing the course into the 3-year cycle.

How long does the review process take?

School leaders should plan to spend some time on campus preparing a new course for certification prior to a teacher’s enrolling in the implementation course. The review process at One Schoolhouse takes approximately two weeks to complete from the date of submission. Contact us for more information with your specific dates.

How should a school name or designate certified courses?

A school can title or designate a certified course using its own system for course nomenclature, and are free to append Advanced Independent Curriculum™ to that course. 

Sample language for a counselor or teacher recommendation letter: ....a course that has been certified as having been designed in accordance with the One Schoolhouse Advanced Independent Curriculum™ process.

How should a school communicate with colleges or other outside entities about certified courses?

​We strongly urge that a school explain One Schoolhouse course certification on the school profile that it submits among the required materials in support of student applications for college admissions and that it may use for other purposes. This is our suggested profile language for specifically describing One Schoolhouse Advanced Independent Curriculum™ certification: 

Certain courses offered by [OUR SCHOOL] have been designated as Advanced Independent Curriculum™ through the One Schoolhouse certification program. Such courses have been designed and are taught based on rigorous adherence to the One Schoolhouse Standards for Advanced Independent Curriculum™ as mediated by the mission and academic philosophy of [OUR SCHOOL].

Schools using the Advanced Independent Curriculum™ descriptor in promotional or other materials should also refer them to www.independentcurriculum.org.
